Trends change regularly and it is very easy to choose to ignore them and continue putting in the hard slog to push products that aren’t necessarily the flavour of the moment, but in reality, if you aren’t keeping track of them then you could be missing out on big sales opportunities.

The pandemic has led to a change in home interiors trends that we may not have seen for another few years if we hadn’t been cooped up in our houses for so long. There has been a growing attraction to bring the outside in and vice versa, especially for city dwellers, as more people are realising that nature can lift their mood and improve their health. As our gardens have been the main socialising area in our homes during the COVID-19 crisis, the importance of this space working outside summer months has increased tenfold and people have been investing in sheltered seating areas, outdoor kitchens and heating appliances.

But what about inside our homes? You may have already heard that there has been a revival of “broken-plan living” after people were forced to work from home during lockdown and realised that open-plan living wasn’t providing an optimum space for concentration, especially when you had a few kids running about! There has also been a steer towards warm, earthy colours on the walls, textured furniture and decorative joinery such as cladded walls and built-in wardrobe doors. A positive to come out of lockdown is that people have become a lot more environmentally conscious and they are favouring reducing plastic usage and low-waste living – an advantage of MDF mouldings over timber.

So, with all of these changes, have we noticed an impact on the popularity of certain MDF skirting profiles? Absolutely! Whilst traditional profiles such as the Ogee and Torus remain prominent in almost all UK and Ireland regions, and simple contemporary profiles such as the Square Edge or Pencil Round are still best sellers, there has been an uplift in requests for Grooved and Chamfered skirting designs across the board.

You may be surprised to know there are regional variations when it comes to popular MDF skirting and architrave profiles. For example, in Scotland they favour a range of Ogee profiles, from the slight gradient of the SAM97 Ogee or the Ogee and Bead profile to the more defined curves of the SAM15 Ogee. In Wales, more people are buying the Ovolo profile for their homes and across the island of Ireland the Chamfer and Round profile is especially attractive.
